Planning a build…

The leap was made in the spring of 2017. My husband and I finally purchased some land.  I say finally because we had been looking at real estate and land for several years.   We love the home we are in, but knew it wasn’t our forever home. Our dreams became a reality when the land officially became ours in August of last year.

Building a home had always been a dream of mine, but my husband wanted this to become a reality.  I knew building was not going to be a walk in the park.  It’s expensive, it’s stressful, and it’s a long process . . . oh, joy!

It has been 7 months since the land has been ours and lots of things have happened.

If you are thinking of building.  This will test your:

1- Patience               2- Organizational skills                3- Communication

There is much to say with what we have learned over the past months.   To sum it up, nothing gets done fast. Nothing.

Here are 3 tips for you that have helped me so far:

1- Pinterest. I have boards for every room in the house, and exterior.  It’s a great way to organize thoughts, ideas, wishes, but also to communicate your vision with your husband 🙂 and contractor.

2- A website. Costtobuild.net. I literally googled “cost to build estimator”.  This is a good point of reference to begin the process of planning a budget (and you don’t have to talk to anyone or pay a contractor to generate the dollar amount).

3- Tape measure. I walked around my house for months with a tape measure. I even asked my family what dimensions the rooms in their home were.

So . . . At this point, we have had 2 draft of plans and within the month the final prints will be done.  Next step is handing them over to our contractor to get a final estimate to build!
